Transformation of a Bodhisattva,
Footsteps of an Ascetic Monk

l973 San Francisco
Grand Opening of the International Institute for
the Translation of Buddhist Texts

It was here that many of the first editions of the Buddhist Text Translation Society's English translations were completed. Instilling Virtue School (later known as Instilling Goodness Elementary School) was also founded here in l976.

The Venerable Master is shown "opening the light" on the forty-two hands and eyes Guanyin Bodhisattva image that adorned and protected the Institute during the Grand Opening Ceremonies. The mantra he taught us to recite was shi fo la shi fo la / to la tuo la / pin tuo la pin tuo la / chen tuo chen tuo / hu xin hu xin" which is a section at the beginning of the Fourth Assembly of the Shurangama Mantra.

The Venerable Master's verse for shi fo la shi fo la says:

The Buddha Jewel universally illumines, emitting immeasurable light
That shines throughout the Dharma Realm and the treasury of empty space.
Having opened, revealed, awakened to, and entered proper knowledge and views,
They are the greatly enlightened kings who have attained unsurpassed Bodhi.
